What You Can Learn About Dog Training From George Washington

We made it.

The storm hit and I have a four foot snow drift by the back door but we made it. They said it was supposed to be one of the worst storms in the last 100 years.

They exaggerated…..again.

Whatever.

It allowed me to catch up on some reading which I love to do and history is a favorite subject.

Read one interesting story about Washington’s crossing the Delaware on Christmas night.

Washington’s troops were on the ropes. They were tattered and in terrible shape. The Hessian commander thought they would never mount an attack. The commander was at a party playing cards with his pals when a local farmer showed up with some intel about Washington making a move.

Hang with me because I have a point to make.

The commander was passed a note about Washington advancing. The commander put the note in his pocket and kept playing cards.

We all know what happened next. Washington opened a giant can of whoop ass and took 900 Hessian soldiers as prisoners. The commander… dead from a mortal wound he received during battle.

Good lesson for anyone ever facing even a hint of aggression. The Hessian commander thought it inconceivable that some little rag tag group of beat up soldiers could beat the feared Hessians.

I can’t tell you how many times a dog owner has said to me, “I can’t believe my dog did that.”

This statement usually comes after the dog has bitten someone. All the signs were there and often they were ignored, excuses were made, or it was something that they were going to get to.

I imagine the Hessian commander laying there looking at his wound, slowly dying and thinking: “I can’t believe Washington did that.”

Here’s the deal:

Dogs are predators, predators kill other animals. Dogs are unique because they have strong social needs that make them great pets but you have to understand and take steps to make sure your dog is ALWAYS safe.

This is accomplished by teaching your dog two words:

YES and NO.

The Yes part is easy. The No part, well that takes a little more work but if you ignore teaching your dog the word NO you could be saying to me, “I can’t believe my dog did that.”

Anyway, you’re in luck because I can show you how to teach YES and NO. Go here next and get started:
