The Inner Game of Dog Training

The Inner Game of Dog Training

How much weight could you lift if someone you loved was trapped underneath it?

In 2017, Eddie Hall became the World’s Strongest Man, setting a historic world record by deadlifting an astounding 1,102 pounds.

In an interview, Eddie revealed the real secret behind lifting that kind of  weight. He explained that he can only pull those numbers in high-stakes competition—his everyday gym sessions are done with much lighter weight.

To lift over half a ton, he has to prime his mind. He doesn’t visualize a barbell loaded with metal plates. He visualizes lifting a car off his children.

That mental shift was the only way he could unlock that level of physical performance. His inner game dictated his outer game.

It’s amazing how often we overlook our mindset—not just in fitness, but in dog training.

So many dog owners come to me completely convinced their dog is the exception to the rule. They tell me, "My dog is too stubborn," "My dog does not listen to me," or "My dog will never be able to go off-leash."

A few years back, a client came to me with a dream: he wanted to walk his dog off-leash during his family’s annual Martha’s Vineyard vacation. But he was deeply skeptical. He owned a bird dog that bolted after every scent, ignored commands, and had zero recall.

I told him it was completely doable.

Before we could transform his dog, we had to transform his inner game. He had to believe his dog was capable of a level of obedience he’d never thought possible.

Within a short period of focused training, that bird dog was reliably off-leash, listening on a dime, and having the time of his life on the island beaches.

I see this transformation every week. When new clients step into class and see advanced dogs working flawlessly off-leash, their immediate reaction is: “My dog could never do that.”

Then the veteran handlers smile and tell them: “We said the exact same thing when we started.”

I get it. When you live with a dog that pulls like a Mack truck, barks at every passerby, jumps on guests, and steals food off the counter, reliable obedience feels like a fantasy.

You don't have a "bad" dog. You just need the right system—and the confidence to see it through.
