Why waving hot dogs in your barking dog’s face will NEVER fix leash reactivity

Let’s not mince words:
If you are currently terrified every time you turn the corner on your daily walk… if your shoulder is wrenched from your dog lunging, barking, and screaming at the sight of another dog… and if your current "solution" is crossing the street, hiding behind parked cars, or praying no one else walks by…
You are living as a hostage to your own dog.
And worse, you’ve probably been told by some trendy, certificate-happy trainer that the "modern" way to fix this is to carry a pouch full of liver treats and "redirect their focus."
Never going to work. And I feel terrible when I hear about this. A dog owner goes to a dog trainer looking for help and they get advice that will NEVER work. How are you going to stop a dog from flipping out by waving a cookie in their face?
Here’s the good news. I just finished writing a new guide and the best part is it is 100% FREE!
How to Stop Leash Reactivity Fast - The Straightforward Guide to Ending Barking, Lunging, and Chaos on the Leash
The biggest question I get from reactive dog owner is this one:
“Why does my dog do this?”
Here is how I explain it in the guide:
To fix reactivity, you must first understand how your dog’s brain works in high-stress moments.
1. Single-Event Learning
Dogs learn certain behaviors through repetition, but fear and survival instincts are encoded through single-event learning.
If your dog was once charged, tackled, or snapped at by an off-leash dog—even once—that single traumatic incident can flip a switch in their brain. From that day forward, the presence of another dog signals imminent danger.
2. The Leash Trap (Fight vs. Flight)
In nature, a nervous animal has two primary survival choices: flight or fight. (Freeze is a 3rd choice but very rare).
When your dog is off-leash at daycare or in a fenced yard, they have the freedom to move away, avoid conflict, and de-escalate. Flight is an open option.
The moment you attach a leash, flight is completely removed.
With escape impossible, your dog defaults to the only remaining survival mechanism: fight. They make themselves look as loud, ferocious, and dangerous as humanly possible to keep the perceived threat at bay.
You are NEVER going to fix this problem with cookies. This situation requires you to give your dog clear boundaries.
You take your foot off the gas pedal when you see a police cruiser on the highway because you want to avoid a ticket. A fair, communicative boundary gives your dog a clear reason to abandon unwanted behaviors.
Once you understand and start to apply this you’ll be able to take your dog anywhere. Your dog’s life greatly improves. Your life gets easier and you can start to enjoy walks again.
Here is how one dog went from out of control to walking around busy, crowded Boston streets:
"Can’t thank Eric enough. We went from reactivity where walks were a stressful experience, to walking in downtown Boston with ZERO issues, after only one session. His training has changed our lives!! I have a happier, more confident dog. Thank you Eric!" - Molly Reardon
Your dog can do the same! You think your dog will never improve but they can when you know the right steps. Get the free guide:
