Do NOT Feed Your Dog Grapes

Interesting response to yesterday’s email. Here are few of the messages I received after yesterday’s highly entertaining, informational and interesting email: “YOU’RE AN IDIOT! YOU NEVER FEED A DOG GRAPES!” “You do know that grapes are toxic for dogs.” “”I thought grapes are not safe for dogs.” “Dogs are NOT supposed to eat grapes.!” “Hey stupid, grapes give dogs kidney disease.” Some people can be so touchy. Luckily, I am an optimistic person and will take some of the blame for the misunderstanding. In case you missed yesterday’s highly entertaining, informational and interesting email here is what I said: START:… Read the rest

Chew On This

Little Scarlett has been a little cranky lately. And I think I know why. Within the last few days her little teeth have been coming in and I think that is the reason. We went to my sister’s house last night for dinner and all she was interested in eating were frozen grapes. Thankfully she hasn’t chewed up my shoes or TV remote which is what happens when puppies start teething. Speaking of teething, let me share some tips with you because there is a lot of misinformation out there, especially when it comes to taste deterrents. Taste deterrents are… Read the rest

South Coast Dog Training – How To Solve 80% Of Behavior Problems In Dogs

So many of you know by now that Rach, Scarlett and I have moved back to the South Coast. The move happened fast. Much faster than we expected and I had to work about a week straight from 7:00AM to about 8:00PM. Packing, moving, yard work, unpacking, cleaning etc. When you are that busy you never have any problems sleeping through the night. You really appreciate hitting the sack. Which leads me to today’s brilliant insight. Many of the behavior problems we have with our dogs is the direct result of too much pent up energy. Years ago I had… Read the rest

How To Teach Your Dog To LOVE The Crate

Crates are one of the best management tools a dog owner can use. For new puppies, a crate is crucial. As a former animal control officer, I have seen puppies get sick or injured because they were allowed too much freedom. The trick to teaching a dog or puppy to love their crate is to build desire. Using force or bribes will only backfire on you. Steps 1. The first step is to think a little like your dog. Your dog does not want to go into the crate because he does not want his freedom taken away. Given a… Read the rest

Your Seven Step, Ten Day Housetraining Plan

Seems like I spent most of the week helping new puppy owners housetrain their pups. Housetraining can be accomplished in as little as ten days if you follow a plan, a plan that has worked for many dog owners. The closer you follow the plan, the better the results. Step 1: Understand dog behavior – dogs do not know right from wrong. What they understand is safe and dangerous. When your puppy comes into your house he doesn’t understand that it is “bad” behavior to urinate on your carpet. We want to teach your dog that going in the house… Read the rest

Why Your Dog Pulls On Leash – And What You Can Do About It

Boy comes home with all F’s on his report card. Shows his dad the report card and then asks: “Well dad, what do you think it is? Genetics or environment?” Funny joke with a lot of truth to it. The boy holds the father accountable for his poor results. Training a dog can be tough because the results are up to us and one of the most difficult commands is leash walking. Most dogs pull because they constantly get rewarded for it. Think about it for a second. Your dog is on leash and sees a telephone pole he wants… Read the rest

The Best Trainer In The World

Just back from vacation. Spent a week on the beautiful beaches in the great state of Delaware, close to the first town in the first state. Anyway, there were nieces and nephews all over the place and the subject of behavior came up when there was any discussion of child rearing. I explained that the best trainer in the world could help them with their kids. That this trainer was very accurate and knew how to get kids to do any behavior with no force or intimidation. The trainer? GRANDMA! Yes, Grandmothers are great trainers and the term “Grandma’s Law”… Read the rest

Fall River MA Dog Owners Learn #1 Dog Training Success Secret

I was teaching a dog training class in Fall River MA a few years back. I asked them if they would like to learn the #1 dog training success secret? I added that it wouldn’t be found in any dog training book – including mine. You see, I found the secret in a business book. The book was written by Jeff Olson and the name of it is, “The Slight Edge.” Mr. Olson states that there are two types of people in the world. They are: 1. The “Gee, I’m glad I did that.” 2. And the “Darn, I wish… Read the rest

Watching This TV Show Will Help You Train Your Dog

Did you know that there is a TV show that can help you get better dog training results? This show was popular for years and the writers had one big rule for the show. The rule was: No hugging, no learning. Have you figured out what the show is yet? If you know me, you probably know that the show I am talking about is Seinfeld. So why would a show that had a rule about no hugging and no learning be good for dog training. Because as the great Zig Ziglar said: “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine… Read the rest
