Avoid Dog Aggression With This One Simple Trick

“I guess I’m just quite observant and I pay attention to a lot of things. Human behavior really fascinates me.” – Ellie Goulding I like that quote because I could have written it. People ask me all the time: “Where do you come up with ideas to write this email everyday.” All I really do is keep my head on a swivel and look for ideas. I then make sure I take some quick notes so I can deliver this educational, informative, highly entertaining daily email. This past weekend was July 4th, one of my favorite holidays here in the… Read the rest

Fall River Dog Trainer Discovers Simple “Choice” That Will Make Your Dog Better

Albert Camus wrote: “Freedom is nothing but a chance to be better.” I like that quote a lot. I like it because it reminds me of why I opened my own dog training business in Fall River MA back in 1995. I had been working for a large dog training and boarding facility in Connecticut and couldn’t stand the way they did training. Every single dog was issued a choke chain and if you used a treat – look out, your head was on the chopping block. Before working there, I was the K-9 Supervisor for a large security company… Read the rest

If You Will Not Give Me Respect I Will Take It Out Of Your Hide

Have you ever heard of “The Mighty Atom?’ The Mighty Atom was Joe Greenstein; a 5’4” Jewish Strongman that beat the hell out of Nazi’s in New York City, bent metal bars on his chest, chewed spikes in half and was one hell of a fascinating dude. He is famous for saying: “I give you respect. But I do not ask for yours in return. I demand it. If you will not give it to me, I will take it out of your hide.” Kind of funny and from what I’ve read about him, it seems to fit his personality.… Read the rest

The Best Collar To Control 900 Pound Dog

A subscriber has to know: “Eric,  My dog weighs 110. She is just over 2 years old she is strong. I’m a small woman and I’m just starting to get some control over her  using the prong collar. She almost killed me a few times by running away after dogs and people she wanted to play with (I was still attached to the leash..LOL  ). Funny now….but not so funny then.  I have 2 hip replacements and I couldn’t walk for 3 weeks. Do you still advocate NO prong collar?”  – Lillian Thanks for your question Lillian. One of the… Read the rest

How To Prevent A Dangerous Canine Microburst

Are you familiar with the term, “Microburst?” A microburst is like a small 60 to 90 second hurricane that comes out of nowhere. No warning, no time to react, you pretty much are in the middle of a terrible storm and have no idea where it came from or why it happened. I was in the middle of one years back the day of my brother’s wedding. He was getting married outside in my parent’s backyard who live in Swansea. Out of nowhere, the microburst hit and within seconds everything was destroyed. The tent was ripped out of the… Read the rest

I Will Bite Every German Shepherd If I Have To

So soccer fever is in full swing all over the world. I know the rest of the world calls it football but we have a conflict here in America, so soccer it is. As I write this, America is getting ready to take on Germany and by time you read this there is already a winner. Anyway, saw a video yesterday of Will Ferrell giving a pep talk to the U.S. team. During the talk he says that he will bite every German player if he has to. Funny, and it reminded me of what I was always told about… Read the rest

Is Your Dog In Trouble For Associating With You?

In my younger days I spent a fair amount of time in the local watering holes. One in particular was not exactly the most high class place, but being young and unskilled, funds required me to search out happy hours offering free food and cheap drinks. It helped that most of my friends hung out at the same places. Anyway, one night one of my friends got into a scuffle with some guy none of us knew. The stranger was obnoxious and my friend grew tired of him and told him to shut his pie hole. This seemed to ignite… Read the rest

Are You A Sucker?

Quick, who said this? “There’s a sucker born every minute.” I would make a hefty bet that most of you would answer: “Who is P.T. Barum.” And that is where I would say in my best Alex Trebek impersonation, “Sorry, no.” You see, ole P.T. was a big fan of playing jokes and doing outrageous hoaxes but he was really focused on providing exceptional value in everything he did. I was thinking of P.T. Barnum this past week because of all the hoaxes popping up on social media. The first was the little girl getting kicked out of Kentucky Fried… Read the rest

One Of The Saddest (And Scariest) Days Of My Life

Juanita Torres (name changed) went swimming with her family one summer afternoon in the Farmington River. Something happened and Juanita was dragged under the water. No one could find her. Police and fire department were contacted and still no one could find her. State police divers were called in and searched for two days. Still no recovery. On the third day her family members found her and took her little, lifeless body into their van and went to back to the neighborhood that she lived in. A large group of friends and family gathered and followed the van to the… Read the rest

The Greatest Dog Training Book Ever Written

Started a group obedience class last night at the Humane Society & Shelter South Coast in Dartmouth MA. Great class with some really nice dogs. Some of the younger pups were so excited that they were not interested in treats or their owners. They wanted to party. So a great question was asked: “What do I do when my dog is not interested in me or the treats?” Some trainers would recommend force. Some would advise patience. Others would blame the dog. Not me. I say: “Let the dog have what it wants.” “What? How can you say that? What… Read the rest
