Let’s talk politics today.
It’s funny for me to watch what is going on right now. The Trump thing is interesting. Some of my friends are very pro-Trump, friends that have never shown any interest in politics.
Other friends are petrified and make comments like:
“What if this guy really gets elected?”
My answer to my friends is always the same:
“Trump will never make it to election day.”
And my belief and opinion is that he is doing it for ONE reason. And that reason is…..
…..ATTENTION!
Yesterday he made a comment that was revealing. He talked about his first book, “The Art Of The Deal,” which was written in 1987. He said that it was his second favorite book. That there was only one book better than his.
“It’s my second favorite book of all time,” said Trump. “Do you know what my first is? The Bible! Nothing beats the Bible,” he added to applause.
There is a great dog training lesson in all this. I already pointed it out but let me share it again. The lesson is:
ATTENTION!
Trump has received BILLIONS of dollars worth of free publicity and attention. BTW – do you know when Trump said he was going to run for President for the first time?
1987 – when he wrote his first book, “The Art Of The Deal,” which generated enough publicity to propel it to become a bestseller.
Back to dog training.
The first step is to always work on attention and engagement. You have to have your dog focused on you. Your dog has to be engaged and ready to work.
If your dog has a belly full of Puppy Chow and you decide to do some training, there is a good chance that your dog will not engage and give you full attention if you are using food.
Dog training is always about motivation.
If you train before your dog’s breakfast you’ll get much better results. I always start with my dog on leash and spend a few minutes backing up and getting my dog focused and ready to do some training.
The next time you train spend the first few minutes just working on attention. Reward him for looking at you. This is a great time to even let your dog get pushy.
I love working with a dog that is focused and nudges me to keep going.
I know that I’ll be able to get the dog to do better obedience when I have full attention and engagement.
You can see how it’s done over at The Dog Training Inner Circle.
And you can fully engage and become a member for just $1.00!
That should get your attention.
Best,
Eric
