Why Every Dog Owner Should Study Football

Thankfully football season is back. Watching the Red Sox was getting impossible. Especially when they lose to the Yankees. UGH! So with football back we all know that Tom Brady is going to march the Patriots straight into the Superbowl and all will be right with the world. I sometimes wonder if I like football so much because it is a lot like dog training. You see, football is a series of stops and starts. The game lasts close to three hours but each play lasts just a few seconds. And this is important for you to remember when you… Read the rest

“Talk To Me Goose”

Quick – what’s one of the all time greatest movies ever made? If you answered Top Gun you are correct. I haven’t met anyone yet that has not loved that movie. I’m sure there are some that don’t but they are few and far in between. If for some reason you’ve been living in a cave or on a desert island since 1986 and have NOT seen the movie, it is a story about two Navy pilots attending Fighter Weapons School, also known as Top Gun. Goose is a character who dies, and when his friend (Maverick) is in trouble… Read the rest

Westport MA Dog Learns Calm Behavior When Doorbell Rings

So I was over in Westport MA doing some dog training the other day. I was working with a Springer Spaniel teaching calm behavior. This Spaniel had a problem that many dogs have. He goes absolutely out of his mind when someone rings the doorbell. Barking, jumping, circling, bouncing off the furniture and the owner can’t stand it. She wants her to dog to calmly greet her guests when they come over. I had a helper ring the doorbell and watched what happened. After the explosion and once the dog calmed down I sat down with the owner and said… Read the rest

The #1 Most Confusing Dog Training Question – Answered

Got a question yesterday. “Eric, everyone talks about positive reinforcement. Reward the dog for doing obedience, catch your dog doing something right. Focus on what your dog does good and try to not focus on the bad behavior. That is all good but what do I do if my dog jumps or steals food off the counter?” Great question and this often confuses people. Your training is NOT just about all about rewards. There are positive AND negative consequences. You use a positive consequence when you want your dog to do something you want – sit, down, stay, come, etc.… Read the rest

Interesting Observation At Fall River’s Bark In The Park

Yesterday was a lot of fun in Fall River. I had a booth at a local event called The Bark In The Park in Fall River. Saw a lot of great dogs and people. I also was surprised by a few of the dogs and their owners. I was walking past this one booth and there was a German Shepherd on a prong collar. The Shepherd was snapping at a guy trying to pet him. The owner yanked back on the leash telling the Shepherd to calm down. The person approached again and the dog again snapped missing the guy… Read the rest

Dog Training Moses In Westport MA

Been meeting with a lot of new clients lately And after the past week, I noticed a common thread. Last week I was meeting with a new client in Westport that needed some dog training help. She was an experienced dog owner and had read many books on the subject and had also hired a few dog trainers. I noticed she had some serious self confidence issues. She felt she had messed up her dog and did a bad job with training. She broke down and told me that she allows her dog to sleep on the bed. That she… Read the rest

Is Your Dog Hard Wired To Steal?

Read an interesting story the other day about human behavior. The article stated that when it comes to stealing, 10% of the population would die before they stole a loaf of bread to feed their family. They are just hard wired that way. On the other hand, there is 10% of the population that will steal no matter what. They steal everything they can. The rest fall into a category that is situational. If the circumstances are right they will steal. This was interesting to me because of course I immediately think of dogs. Dogs love to steal. They steal… Read the rest

Dog Training In Swansea MA

My parents live in Swansea. The street they live on has a lot of dog owners and one her friends was having a jumping problem with her dog. My mom asked if I could help. But first I have to make a confession. I haven’t been completely honest with some of my clients and I apologize. This comment will explain why. Anyway, here is what my mom’s friend had to say after our training session. “I HAVE to give Eric 2 thumbs up on his training knowledge… just to give you a little history… I have a chocolate lab 11… Read the rest

Chew On This

Little Scarlett has been a little cranky lately. And I think I know why. Within the last few days her little teeth have been coming in and I think that is the reason. We went to my sister’s house last night for dinner and all she was interested in eating were frozen grapes. Thankfully she hasn’t chewed up my shoes or TV remote which is what happens when puppies start teething. Speaking of teething, let me share some tips with you because there is a lot of misinformation out there, especially when it comes to taste deterrents. Taste deterrents are… Read the rest

South Coast Dog Training – How To Solve 80% Of Behavior Problems In Dogs

So many of you know by now that Rach, Scarlett and I have moved back to the South Coast. The move happened fast. Much faster than we expected and I had to work about a week straight from 7:00AM to about 8:00PM. Packing, moving, yard work, unpacking, cleaning etc. When you are that busy you never have any problems sleeping through the night. You really appreciate hitting the sack. Which leads me to today’s brilliant insight. Many of the behavior problems we have with our dogs is the direct result of too much pent up energy. Years ago I had… Read the rest
