To Click Or Not To Click – That Is A Question I Often Get

One question that I get on a regular basis is if I use clickers. My answer is yes and no. To me it really depends on the person I am working with. Some people love them and get great results with them. Others, like an old grizzled wrestler I’m working with and has had dogs since before I was born, would never use a clicker. So if you’re wondering about clickers, let me break it down for you. Clickers are a great training tool. They help you communicate and pinpoint which behavior is being rewarded. They really can speed up… Read the rest

Is Your Dog Easily Distracted? Here’s What To Do

Once a month I hold a free seminar for a local shelter. I don’t just teach the attendees how to understand and train their dogs. I put on a show. I dazzle them with canine knowledge, I illuminate them with stories of my long and adventurous career in dog training. I share stories of danger and excitement. And the audience sits there spellbound hanging on each word until….. …..they get an update on their cell phone. I was sharing a story of a full scale riot I was involved in years ago and the role the dogs played in it.… Read the rest

If Dogs Could Vote – They’d All Vote For ME!

It’s election day here in America. And I will do my civic duty and vote today. I would never make a very good politician. Mostly because I always try to apply some of Napoleon Hill’s best advice. If you read Nap Hill’s stuff you quickly learn that he teaches “accurate thinking.” A skill that is difficult to develop. The main reason is that we make decisions based on emotions. Once you pair a belief backed by strong emotions, look out. Normal, rational people become insane and all reason goes out the window. Years ago I saw firsthand the harm choke… Read the rest

Symbol That Strikes Fear And Terror In Millions

It’s become a symbol of fear. The image strikes panic in the hearts of millions. One look and people shake in terror. What is this image that I speak of? I am talking about….. ……a hockey mask. Before the movie “Friday The 13th” came out, was anyone afraid of a hockey mask? Funny how associations work. Pair a harmless item with some gruesome murders, a lot of blood, the right music and bingo – full fledged scarefest. Anyway, tonight your dog may get nervous around the constant parade of ghouls, goblins and little “Jasons” knocking on your door. The best… Read the rest

50 Years In The Making

So tomorrow night is Halloween. My parents were married on Halloween 50 years ago tomorrow. They are celebrating at Emeril Lagasse’s restaurant in New Orleans, so Happy Anniversary Mom and Pop! Mom is my biggest fan and reads all of my emails and always posts them on Facebook. She is actually the one responsible for me becoming a dog trainer. She is a huge dog lover and when I was about seven she brought home a puppy. She and my father were walking around Union Park in Boston. There were a couple of hippies with a box a puppies. Why You And Your Dog Have To Be Careful Around The “Experts”

So by now many of you know that I disagree with a lot of “conventional dog training wisdom.” The “experts” are always telling dog owners to: Never let your dog sleep on the bed. Never play tug of war. Always use a choke chain. Don’t let your dog out the door before you. Wait until six months old before training. You know that my take on all of the above is phooey! Let your dog sleep on the bed, play tug games, never use a choke chain, walking out the door – please, six months before training is a sure… Read the rest

Making coffee and listening to the radio this morning. I always bring Rachael her coffee in bed (especially now being five months prego) but had to stop and listen to what I was hearing. He gave a description, details of the robbery AND the address. A police officer checked it out and found that the house was robbed. He tracked down the moron who did it and arrested him and his crew.
