Interesting Observation At Fall River’s Bark In The Park

Yesterday was a lot of fun in Fall River. I had a booth at a local event called The Bark In The Park in Fall River. Saw a lot of great dogs and people. I also was surprised by a few of the dogs and their owners. I was walking past this one booth and there was a German Shepherd on a prong collar. The Shepherd was snapping at a guy trying to pet him. The owner yanked back on the leash telling the Shepherd to calm down. The person approached again and the dog again snapped missing the guy… Read the rest

Is Your Dog A “Situational Extrovert?”

I get a lot of emails like this one: “Eric, I want to be a dog trainer. I really HATE people and would love to work with dogs. How do I become a dog trainer?” My answer often surprises them. This is what they get as a response: “Thanks for your email. I would strongly, strongly suggest you find another profession. Dog trainers spend more of their time training people than dogs. Success in this profession has more to do with how you deal with people than their dogs.” Most do not like this advice. It’s funny to me because… Read the rest

Dog Training Moses In Westport MA

Been meeting with a lot of new clients lately And after the past week, I noticed a common thread. Last week I was meeting with a new client in Westport that needed some dog training help. She was an experienced dog owner and had read many books on the subject and had also hired a few dog trainers. I noticed she had some serious self confidence issues. She felt she had messed up her dog and did a bad job with training. She broke down and told me that she allows her dog to sleep on the bed. That she… Read the rest

Is Your Dog Hard Wired To Steal?

Read an interesting story the other day about human behavior. The article stated that when it comes to stealing, 10% of the population would die before they stole a loaf of bread to feed their family. They are just hard wired that way. On the other hand, there is 10% of the population that will steal no matter what. They steal everything they can. The rest fall into a category that is situational. If the circumstances are right they will steal. This was interesting to me because of course I immediately think of dogs. Dogs love to steal. They steal… Read the rest

Dog Training In Swansea MA

My parents live in Swansea. The street they live on has a lot of dog owners and one her friends was having a jumping problem with her dog. My mom asked if I could help. But first I have to make a confession. I haven’t been completely honest with some of my clients and I apologize. This comment will explain why. Anyway, here is what my mom’s friend had to say after our training session. “I HAVE to give Eric 2 thumbs up on his training knowledge… just to give you a little history… I have a chocolate lab 11… Read the rest

I’ve Tried Everything But My Dog Still Pulls

Are you familiar with Jim Rohn? Jim Rohn was a great entrepreneur, writer and speaker. One thing he is famous for teaching is what he calls, “The Principle of Massive Action.” He states that if you are stuck with anything (including dog training) then taking action is NOT enough. You have to take what he calls Massive Action. Instead of just trying one solution to the problem you apply 10 to 20 at the same time. I met with a client yesterday and after two minutes I knew I was going to have to come up with a Massive Action… Read the rest

Stores That You Can Bring Your Dog Into

Last week I did an interview with The Fall River Herald. It was for a new book I wrote that is available on Amazon. Being the summer months, we talked about dogs being left in cars. I said that it is unfortunate that in this country dogs are not allowed in so many places. I think we would have much better behaved dogs if we could go more places with them. There is one town close by and dogs are not invited anywhere. Parks, beaches, walking paths – NO DOGS ALLOWED. I get it, I really do. There are dog… Read the rest

Fall River Dog Trainer Reveals How Miley Cyrus Can Help You Teach Leash Walking

“Dog Trainer Tackles Dog-Walking In New Book” is how a recent interview I did with the Fall River Herald News was titled. I think “How Miley Cyrus Can Help You Teach Leash Walking” would have been more interesting but I don’t think we ever got around to talking about that chapter. In the book I wrote a chapter about how Miley Cyrus can help you with leash walking. Here are some of the other chapters: • The Art Of Loose Leash Walking • Five Steps To Better Leash Walking • Loose Leash Walking Made Easy • Why Your Dog Pulls… Read the rest

Use Fonzie’s “Secret Fear” To Train Your Dog

As a kid, the TV show Happy Days was a favorite. Of course, everyone loved “The Fonz.” The coolest guy that could fix electronic problems with a slap of his hand, got all the chicks, and everyone was afraid of him. But.. …even the Fonz had a secret fear. His secret fear can help you teach your dog to walk on leash. Would you like to know what that fear is? Okay, the Fonz’s secret fear was: BEEF LIVER! And beef liver, my friend, can help you train your dog faster than you can say, “Sit on it.” You see,… Read the rest

The #1 Reason Your Dog Does NOT Respond to Your Commands

So I got a few emails about my Uncle Bubba. A few people wrote saying that I was making that up and there is no real Uncle Bubba. So let me clearly state that I do have an Uncle Bubba. His real name is Lloyd and he owned Sunny Side Up Restaurant on Main St. in Manchester. CT. My brother and I both worked for him. One day my brother came into work very tired and was helping Bubba on the grill. It was very busy and my uncle threw a corn muffin at him and yelled: “Heat it!” When… Read the rest
