Even If God Came Down And Pointed His Hand At Your Dog

So I’m sitting across from this very nice lady and her 6 month old husky the other day.

As she is talking, a picture pops into my head.

I was sitting there thinking of….

….Bill Murray.

I know, my thoughts concern me sometimes too.

Anyway, I was thinking of Bill Murray and one of my all time favorite movies, “Meatballs.”

Funny movie from the 70’s about a summer camp and the hijinks all the camp counselors get into.

The best scene in the movie is when Bill gives a pep talk to rally the camp after losing last year to the rival camp. He gets in front of the kids and delivers the classic scene:

And even if we win, if we win, HAH! Even if we win! Even if we play so far above our heads that our noses bleed for a week to ten days; even if God in Heaven above comes down and points his hand at our side of the field; even if every man woman and child held hands together and prayed for us to win, it just wouldn’t matter because all the really good looking girls would still go out with the guys from Mohawk because they’ve got all the money! It just doesn’t matter if we win or we lose. IT JUST DOESN’T MATTER!

At this point he picks up a log and starts smashing it on the ground as he yells: “IT JUST DOESN’T MATTER! IT JUST DOESN’T MATTER…”

I wanted to pick up a log and do the same thing. I wanted to smash it on the ground and scream: “IT JUST DOESN’T MATTER! IT JUST DOESN’T MATTER!!!”

You see, as a highly skilled, trained professional dog trainer, I hear the same complaint day after day. The nice lady was concerned about the techniques I was using to help train her husky to walk on leash.

She didn’t think it would work with her dog because he was a husky. I hear this just about everyday. My dog is different because he is a husky, beagle, border collie, Lab, cairn terrier, FILL IN THE BLANK.

I always want to grab a log and smash it on the ground and scream: “IT JUST DOESN’T MATTER.”

All kidding aside, there are differences in the breeds. Dogs were bred to do different tasks and I understand that but here is a little secret. The principles of behavior apply and can be used on any animal.

A killer whale, bird, seal or dog are all trained using the principles of behavior which I cover in my dog training classes.
