How I Helped An Aggressive German Shepherd In Less Than 10 Minutes

Okay, maybe you’ve noticed that my writing as of late has not been to the usual high standard you expect and are used to. I don’t have an excuse but I do have an explanation. I’ve been fighting a cold for the past few weeks. I just couldn’t shake it. Probably my fault because I would start feeling good and go back to work which I think prolonged the whole thing. But, I am cautiously optimistic. I think I finally turned the corner and am on the road back. It’s tough finding any motivation to do anything, not to mention… Read the rest

12 Ways To Exercise Your Dog Indoors

The snow is starting to get to many here in the frozen Northeast corridor of the country. Another 4 to 8 inches is on the way. You can see the anger and frustration on Facebook. Most conversations discuss the relentless amount of snow that just keeps coming week after week. Even the local paper is concerned with dogs getting enough exercise during this long stretch of cold and snow. I know this because they contacted me asking if it could be done. Could a dog owner effectively exercise their dog to prevent them from going stir crazy? “YES!” was my… Read the rest

Anyone That Needs More Than A Spotlight And A Microphone Is A Punk

People ask me all the time: “How do you write an email everyday?” It’s really quite simple. I sit down and…..write. I know that’s the simple answer and I do follow a few rituals to get it done. Rituals like: I get up every morning and start writing by 6:00AM. I constantly write and use ideas for email. I write everyday. I always listen to music while I write. And I bet you would never guess who I listen to while I write. What would you guess: Led Zeppelin? Bruce Springsteen? Aerosmith, Van Halen or Eminem? Jimmy Buffett? Katy Perry?… Read the rest

I Was Drunk And Forgot Which Waffle House I Parked My Car At

I was listening to the radio yesterday and heard a story about excuses for being late to work. The best one was, “I was drunk and forgot which Waffle House I parked my car at.” That is awesome. I can’t imagine walking into my bosses office and saying, “Sorry boss, I went out last night and got blasted. In fact I was so drunk I went to get some chicken and waffles. Damnest thing happened, I can’t find my car.” This has to be a joke. I can’t imagine anyone using that as an excuse. You know what else I… Read the rest

Does Your Dog Do The Opposite Of What You Ask?

So my little daughter Scarlett is very interesting to watch. As she approaches her second birthday, she has decided to do the opposite of everything that I ask her not to. “Please don’t take those batteries.” She grabs them and makes a dash for the other room. “Please don’t climb on the table during dinner.” She gets on the table and starts dancing. “Please put down that cup of coffee.” She turns the cup upside down and heads for the door. I don’t get upset and actually think its very interesting to observe. Funny thing is how she laughs as… Read the rest

What You Can Learn About Dog Training From George Washington

We made it. The storm hit and I have a four foot snow drift by the back door but we made it. They said it was supposed to be one of the worst storms in the last 100 years. They exaggerated…..again. Whatever. It allowed me to catch up on some reading which I love to do and history is a favorite subject. Read one interesting story about Washington’s crossing the Delaware on Christmas night. Washington’s troops were on the ropes. They were tattered and in terrible shape. The Hessian commander thought they would never mount an attack. The commander was… Read the rest

Doing this Could Save Your Dog’s Life

The dog was nervous. I couldn’t blame him. He had just been lifted onto the table and the women I worked animal control with and I had to hold him. I looked at this dog and wondered. I wondered where he came from. I wondered who his family was before he came into my life. I wondered what kind of dog he would be in the house. I wondered if I could take him home. We had been told that he was brought to the shelter because the family said the dog was too much work. That he jumped on… Read the rest

How To Deal With A Dog That Gave The Owner 8 Stitches And A Broken Rib

One of the most important books I ever read about dog training had nothing to do with dog training. Sounds confusing but let me splain. The author in the book hammered the point that to be successful you need to learn how to do what he called “accurate thinking.” He went on to write that most people can NOT think accurately because emotion gets in the way and it shuts down their thinking. Emotion overrides rational thinking and snap decisions and opinions are made without truly thinking everything through. You would think it would be easy to think accurately but… Read the rest

What The Heck Is Umbilical Cord Training?

Question that came into ADTM central yesterday: Hi Eric, I really enjoy receiving your emails 🙂 However, I didn’t understand some of the suggestions in the last one; what exactly is an “x-pen” and “umbilical cord training”? Thank you so much, Angela Good question Angela. In case you missed yesterday’s email I was talking about housetraining and taking small, 1% steps to solve any behavior problem or teach any command. I listed some steps you could follow for housetraining and I mentioned x-pens and umbilical cord training. So let’s discuss housetraining a little further. Housetraining is mostly about management and… Read the rest
