The One Word That Will Change The Way You Look At Your Dog

One of my early dog training teachers was my friend, Donna Crowley. It’s funny how you remember meeting certain people and I remember the first day I met her and much of what she taught me about dog training. She was easily one of the biggest influences on my dog training career way back in the early 90’s when I was getting started in the game of dog training. And if there was one point she drove into my head it was….. …..anthropomorphism. “Eric, what does anthropomorphism mean?” Donna asked. “Ah, um, ah, it’s, ah, um, I have no idea.”… Read the rest

You Won’t Believe Why My Wife Is Mad At Me…Again

So my wife is mad at me…. …..again. I don’t think mad is even the correct word. I think it would better be described as frustrated. Here is what happened: I decided to join some dog training Facebook groups which she immediately disagreed with because of what she calls my strong opinions and beliefs. I quickly added: “Opinions and beliefs backed by years of experience and education. Author of four dog training books available on Amazon, approaching 12 million views on YouTube and a thriving online dog training community known as The Dog Training Inner Circle.” She rolled her eyes… Read the rest

Bad News From Fall River

Fall River, Massachusetts. Home of Battleship Cove, great Portuguese food and Emeril Lagasse and George Stephanopoulos can point to Fall River as their hometown. And who can forget the most famous ax murderer of all time – Lizzie Borden? Wait a minute, sorry about that last one. Lizzie was found not guilty. Anyway…. …..it also happens to be where I opened my business back in 1995. I was also an animal control officer there for a few years. So when I woke up this morning I did not like the news being reported. Three pit bulls escaped from their yard… Read the rest

Who Else Wants Their Dog To Perform “Hollywood” Style Tricks

So like many of you, I’ve always loved dogs. Having a dog has always had so many benefits. You always have a friend, you never come home to an empty house and your dog is always happy to see you. I wish I didn’t have to share this with you but my life is pretty much an open book on this blog. I wish I could share some noble and worthy musings and list all the benevolent reasons why I always had a dog. You may think I’m shallow after I share this and I would probably agree but keep… Read the rest

“He is a loathsome, offensive brute, and yet I can’t look away”

“He is a loathsome, offensive brute, and yet I can’t look away.” The above quote is from one of my favorite Seinfeld episodes. A painting of Kramer is being looked at by two potential buyers when the man states: “He is a loathsome, offensive brute, and yet I can’t look away.” They buy the picture. Which brings us to today’s topic. Do you know that I’ve been called a brute. Actually being called a brute is tame compared to what I’ve been called on YouTube, Facebook and even face to face. Why would anyone say negative stuff about me? There… Read the rest

Sleeping In A Tent On Thanksgiving

I’ve roughed it more than a few times in my life. I like camping. I don’t do it as much as I’d like, but sleeping in a tent on Thanksgiving in New England is definitely NOT my cup of tea. Especially to just save a buck. I was looking on Facebook yesterday and saw pictures of people sleeping in front of Target in tents to be first in line for the black Friday sales. Crazy! Anyway, everyone is looking for sales today but I am sure there is no one offering a deal as good as mine. A few days… Read the rest

Why I Have The Best Readers On The Planet

So here we are. The day before Thanksgiving and everyone talking about some pretty bleak stuff so let’s step back for a second and really think about what we are grateful for. I have a lot, including you, my daily readers, people that tune in everyday. And many of you write to tell me how much you enjoy my writing which really I really appreciate, more than you’ll ever know. Like this morning. I opened my email and this is what I had waiting for me. Eric, I must let you know that many, many times before now I have… Read the rest

How To Have A Happy Turkey Day With Your Dog

Here we are. Sliding into the week of Thanksgiving and your pal and hero (me:) is here to help you with your dog. Rach, Scarlett and I will be heading to her parents for Thanksgiving but it won’t be all turkey and gravy for ADTM. I have some training to do. I am going to teach my in-law’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, cleverly named “Charlie”, a few behaviors. He is going to learn to stop barking on command and to go to place – two very useful commands during the holidays. And I plan to record it for you so… Read the rest

What Dog Training Question Can I Answer For You?

I won’t talk about the awesome win the Patriots had yesterday and get right to it. Recently Rach tackled the gargantuan task of moving the entire Dog Training Inner Circle website to a new platform – whatever that means? All I know is that it was a lot of work. We had hundreds of pages to transfer to the new website and all the kinks are worked out but we did have one snafu that couldn’t be fixed. The forum on the old website had thousands of questions, answers and discussions. It was literal “treasure trove” of dog training and… Read the rest

Inside The Mind Of A Dog Trainer

I know this going to be hard to believe but…. …..it is 100% true. Here goes. I was not a very good dog trainer. I know, I know. Hard to believe, you’re thinking there is no way I ever stunk at dog training, that I was probably born with a leash and clicker in my hand. I wasn’t very good because I was a little bit of a hothead. Not with the dogs, the owners. I would often meet a dog owner and if they were not 100% in sync with what I was saying and if they weren’t doing… Read the rest
