Laws Of “Dog Training” Success

Napoleon Hill wrote a book back in the 1930’s called the Laws of Success. In it he shares 17 principles for success. Number 10 is an interesting one. You see, principle 10 is Accurate Thinking and Mr. Hill states: “Accurate thinkers permit no one to do their thinking for them. Gather information and listen to the opinions of others, but reserve for yourself the privilege of making decisions.” This is some great advice for dog trainers because much of the information they teach is opinion based. For example: A trainer that uses electronic collars will say that the dog does… Read the rest

Breaking Bad Attitudes

Had a little chat with the missus the other day. She never watched any of the Breaking Bad series and didn’t want to. I sat her down and said: “Sweetie, let’s just watch the first episode. If you don’t like it we won’t watch it.” We are now watching the entire first season after little Scarlett goes to bed. In the last episode we watched, something interesting happened that made me think of something from years ago. On the show a drug dealer told the main character, Walter White, that he should not be a drug dealer, that he doesn’t… Read the rest

Dog Trainer Reveals One Word Dog Training Secret

I was teaching a class last week in Dartmouth MA and I shared with them the one word that would greatly improve their dog training skillz. See, I can walk into a group of dog owners with unruly dogs, take any one of them and within a few minutes, start getting results. This amazes the dog owners. “Look, he just took the worst dog in the class and now has him walking on leash and listening to him,” I often hear. Really, any good dog trainer can do the same because they know this one word. The word is… …ANTICIPATION!… Read the rest

Confessions Of A Massachusetts Dog Trainer

Saw an article on Facebook yesterday. Said that Massachusetts is the smartest state in the Union. According to percent of population with bachelor’s degrees, median household income and SAT scores, we come out on top. Well I ain’t got a degree and have never taken the SAT. So I guess I don’t fit the typical Massachusetts profile. As many of you know, I barely made it out of high school and have a chronic case of ADHD and when I was in school I was labeled with a learning disability. It reminds me of dog training. I have talked to… Read the rest

New Bedford MA Dog Training – Common Dog Training Mistake

I was doing some dog training in New Bedford MA when I shared this quote with the person I was working with: “The only difference between lettuce and salad is timing.” Its a quote by Dan Kennedy and I used it as I was watching the dog owner train. I explained that the difference between a bribe and a reward is timing. You see, using food rewards are one of the best ways to train your dog. The problem is that you can use them the wrong way. Let me splain: Imagine your dog is in your backyard. You need… Read the rest

Do NOT Feed Your Dog Grapes

Interesting response to yesterday’s email. Here are few of the messages I received after yesterday’s highly entertaining, informational and interesting email: “YOU’RE AN IDIOT! YOU NEVER FEED A DOG GRAPES!” “You do know that grapes are toxic for dogs.” “”I thought grapes are not safe for dogs.” “Dogs are NOT supposed to eat grapes.!” “Hey stupid, grapes give dogs kidney disease.” Some people can be so touchy. Luckily, I am an optimistic person and will take some of the blame for the misunderstanding. In case you missed yesterday’s highly entertaining, informational and interesting email here is what I said: START:… Read the rest

Chew On This

Little Scarlett has been a little cranky lately. And I think I know why. Within the last few days her little teeth have been coming in and I think that is the reason. We went to my sister’s house last night for dinner and all she was interested in eating were frozen grapes. Thankfully she hasn’t chewed up my shoes or TV remote which is what happens when puppies start teething. Speaking of teething, let me share some tips with you because there is a lot of misinformation out there, especially when it comes to taste deterrents. Taste deterrents are… Read the rest

Why Your Dog Pulls On Leash – And What You Can Do About It

Boy comes home with all F’s on his report card. Shows his dad the report card and then asks: “Well dad, what do you think it is? Genetics or environment?” Funny joke with a lot of truth to it. The boy holds the father accountable for his poor results. Training a dog can be tough because the results are up to us and one of the most difficult commands is leash walking. Most dogs pull because they constantly get rewarded for it. Think about it for a second. Your dog is on leash and sees a telephone pole he wants… Read the rest
