Lazy Man’s Guide To Dog Training

Have you ever heard this quote from Bill Gates?

“I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.”

I am all about finding the easiest way of doing something. But it is also misleading.

One question I get asked often is about running a business on the internet. How do you get customers, I am always asked.

My reply is always the same. “It’s easy. I wake up every morning and write an email to my subscribers. It’s the easiest way I have found to consistently get new customers and to keep existing customers interested.”

“That does NOT sound easy,” is the reply.

Some days it is not easy. Coming up with fresh, interesting, entertaining, highly informative emails for you rubes can be challenging some mornings.

But compared to everything else I have done, writing emails is the easiest way to keep the business going.

When it comes to dog training, the easiest AND most effective way to train your dog is by teaching and using markers.

Before you start teaching the basic commands like sit, down, stay etc. your dog should learn some words that will help you communicate to your dog.

My first lesson with a new client is always about teaching them how to use markers.

I start off by saying, “Dogs learn two ways. They learn through association and by consequence. We want to begin by teaching the word, “YES,” through association. We say the word, “YES,” and then give your dog a treat. Repeated pairing will develop a positive association with the word and we can start to use this word to let your dog know when they have correctly done a command.

So the second your dog gets into the sit position we can say, “YES,” and reward. By teaching and using markers you can improve your timing and reward your dog for the right behavior.”

I also teach the words:

Wrong
Good
No

When your dog learns these words you’ll be able to speed up the training process and get much better results.

Anyway, we keep it nice and easy over at The Dog Training Inner Circle where you can get more hard hitting dog training info.
