Jedi Dog Training Manual

The big day is here. It’s opening day for the new Star Wars movie. If I could I would sneak off today and go see the movie. Looks like I’ll have to wait until this weekend. BUT…. I will share with you a real Jedi Mind Trick I use on dogs everyday. You may be thinking “This guy is kidding around. I have more important stuff to do than read about some stupid, made up story. He’s probably going to just try and sell me something anyway.” Leave now and never learn young padawan. Or stay and learn how to… Read the rest

Not Everyone Loves Your Dog

Years ago I went to dinner with a women that I met at a party. We ordered drinks and were making small talk when she said: “I have to make a confession. I don’t really like dogs. I really don’t like the hair, the slobber, and the way most dogs jump on you,” Luckily we had met in separate cars and I did not have to give her a ride home. I smiled and said; “We’re done here. Have a nice night.” She was shocked which surprised me. At the time I had two dogs and was running a thriving… Read the rest

How To Stop A 14 Year Losing Streak

So Navy won again. They beat Army for the 14th year in a row. As I watched the game I noticed something interesting. Late in the game Army quarterback Trent Steelman fumbled the ball as it was hiked to him. When he went to the sidelines I watched as Army coach Jeff Monken give Trent instructions on how to handle the ball. This may seem like a trivial incident to the untrained eye but as a highly skilled observer of human and canine behavior I was shocked by what I saw. Are you familiar with legendary Coach John Wooden of… Read the rest

I Live With An Emotional, Unstable Dictator

Have you ever lived with a dictator? I am currently living with one. And not just any ole dictator. This one is pint sized, often unreasonable, highly emotional and seemingly unstable. Think I’m kidding? I’m being completely honest. Just yesterday I was about to help this dictator out of the car. Screaming and crying immediately erupted and then she threw herself on the ground and would not move. She did not want my help. She did not need my help. She had wanted to let herself out. Five minutes later I was getting a hug and making macaroni and cheese… Read the rest

Is Your Relationship In Trouble Because Of Your Dog? I Can Help

Saw an article about a new couple that were getting serious with each other. The woman in the relationship was adopting a dog. They were both excited as they drove the new dog home. Things started going south as they began discussing training. Gulp. They had very different opinions about dog training. This led to tensions between the two of them. She believed that leadership had to be established, that clear boundaries had to be taught and was not opposed to using the word “NO” when the dog did unacceptable behaviors. The guy was more of the free spirit type.… Read the rest

The One Word That Will Transform Your Dog’s Behavior

So I was standing out in front of Wal Mart the other day. I was ringing the bell for The Salvation Army with my friend Brain. As we were chatting Brian said that my daily emails have not been daily lately. I explained that with two kids, (one an infant) another daughter that recently got married, running my online and offline business and trying to have somewhat of a social life it has been tough to keep up with writing. Brian was ruthless. He said: “I remember reading one of your emails that said you get up everyday and the… Read the rest

Unlucky Dog Training Advice

There is a very common condition that many suffer from. Millions and millions of people woke up this morning and this condition immediately affected them. The condition I am talking about is called: paraskevidekatriaphobia. More commonly known as….. …..fear of Friday the 13th. So a lot of people think about this day and associate it with bad luck. Got me thinking about a dog I just started working with. This dog’s behavior is off the hook, out of control and extremely chaotic. The first time I met this dog I asked the owner to put him in a crate. Turns… Read the rest

My Dog Doesn’t Listen To Me

It’s funny living with a small, spirited, two and half year old girl. Little Scarlett can totally and fully engage with you…or….she can completely ignore you. It’s been a learning experience for me. And I have had to learn how to get her attention. Direct questions or commands do not work with this little girl. But asking her to join me doing something immediately gets her attention. Just yesterday she was in full sprint towards the pond that we live on. Telling her to come back does not work. Yelling at her to come back will fall on deaf ears.… Read the rest
